The Southwest Iowa Band Jamboree scheduled for Saturday, September 30 marks the 62nd year for the festival and is sponsored by the Clarinda Chamber of Commerce, the Clarinda Community Schools and the City of Clarinda. Drawing 55 high school and middle school bands from Iowa, Missouri and Nebraska, more than 2,500 students plan to take part in the daylong festival. Katy Ridge chairs the 2017 Band Jamboree and Julie Murren assists as Vice Chairperson.
The parade begins at 9 a.m. around the downtown square area. The afternoon field activities start at 12:45 p.m. at the Clarinda High School Football Stadium with the flag raising ceremony conducted by the American Legion Sergy Post No. 98. A special feature highlighting the Iowa Western Community College Reiver Marching Band kicks off the activities prior to the presentation of parade competition awards. The Clarinda High School band will perform an exhibition show followed by the afternoon field competition. Spectators will be charged an admission fee of $5 for adults and $3 for students. School activity tickets will not be accepted
The Clarinda Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring the 58th Annual Craft Carnival event – Iowa’s largest handmade craft show scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 21 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is $3 and children under 10 are free.
More than 480 craft booths are registered to fill the Page County Fairgrounds – Cow Palace and Wibholm Hall, the Clarinda Pavilion, Clarinda Lied Center and the Clarinda Academy Activities Center.
Crafters travel from Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri, Minnesota and Wisconsin offering handcrafted glassware, iron works, modern home décor items, garden art, stained glass, pottery, horseshoe art, barn wood furniture, vintage repurposed doors-windows-screens, wearable arts, and more. In addition, food booths featuring gourmet fudge, dip mixes, salsa, homemade Wisconsin cheeses and sausage are popular. Holiday and seasonal items are also offered.
